The importance of trees for our planet

To find solutions for the disappearance of the Trees is one of the most important and urgent things to do.

The importance of trees

Trees are ever so important to our world. They have a significant role in reducing erosion and moderating the climate. They remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store a large part of this in their tissues.

Forests are the habitat of many animals and plants and provide food for fauna and flora. Fruits, seeds, and flowers are the source so life can continue, it is a perfect symbiosis.

Trees as food providers

The fallen leaves provide nutrition for the soil. Trees provide shelter for many animal species, and that is also why one should keep the trees safe. Trees have played an important role throughout history, they have functioned as gathering places, for religious services, as magical places, and where the elders have told little children the stories of their ancestors. The destruction of trees worldwide

I have been writing in the past about the loss of trees, like the Amazon Rainforest, and how it affects our planet. If you wish to read about it, you can visit my post, our dependence on the lungs of the world. A disease detected 100 years ago in California, with no cure in sight, has now migrated to Europe. If you wish to read about it, view my post on how to stop the Ebola of the olive tree.

The clearing of trees to provide pasture for cattle, a field for crop cultivation, or just the excessive need for wood, all contribute to our world having fewer trees. One would think it is only negative news that reaches the people and seemingly no solutions are found to this problem.

The other factor one should not forget to mention is the enormous fires worldwide. Huge fires in the US and this year also very big fires in Portugal and Spain to just name a few of the southern countries in Europe who suffer each year of this problem.

To then know that often these fires are started intentionally is more than sad. I was wondering if I would someday read something positive concerning trees, and I am happy to tell you I came across some really positive information.

A great planting effort

Recently in India, a tremendous effort was made. In only 12 hours, they planted 66 million trees. This happy event took place on 2 July 2017. The government of Madhya Pradesh organized it. 1.5 million voluntaries who planted all these trees of 20 different species along the banks of the Narmada river made this happy and enormous planting action a success.

The banks of this river were carefully chosen and thought to be the ideal place to guarantee the survival of the young trees.

The climate treaty of Paris

India is third on the list of carbon dioxide emissions. During the climate treaty of Paris, they agreed that India should increase its forests by 5 million hectares by the year 2030 to help combat climate change. India’s prime minister Narendra Modi, in a press conference together with the French president Macron, confirmed his country’s commitment to the treaty.

He said that protecting our environment and also Mother Earth is of utmost importance. Sadly, the USA backed out of this treaty.

A big project in Pakistan

In August 2017, another very important project was completed. This project took place in Pakistan and had the name: Tsunami of the thousand Million Trees. The project was successfully concluded 4 months before the projected completion date and now should be repeated in the whole country.

The politician Imran Khan

The idea came from a cricket player and politician, Imran Khan. He wanted to restore the forests in the province as decades of woodcutting had reduced the number of trees considerably. This again caused the entire region to be prone to inundations and earth slides.

In April 2016, heavy showers of rain caused 71 deaths. Mr. Khan said that the melting of the glaciers was causing deforestation in the mountains and that was the reason the project of planting 1000 million trees was so important.

When overtime the trees absorb the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, the hope is it will influence positively climate change. Pakistan is vulnerable to climate change, and in 2017 it was in place number 10 of countries to be highly affected by long-term changes.

Conclusion

The fact that these 2 countries have planted so many new trees is an example to follow by all the other countries in the world. Whenever there has been a big fire, one should always replace the lost trees. For every forest lost to woodcutting, a new forest of young trees should be planted.

If everybody would do the same, our air would certainly be better and our future generation would have a beautiful planet to live on.

If India and Pakistan can do it, all countries can do it too. One should be careful what leaders one should vote for as some are sadly doing the contrary to planting, they prefer cutting the trees to earn money now.

They completely forget our future generations who will also need clean air to breathe. Mother nature provides for everything. We should use her gifts with intelligence instead of destroying it. Human interference upsets the balance on our planet, the only habitat we have.

How to plant a tree

Perhaps you are not so familiar with this subject? Then I would recommend this book which shows you the how-to tricks. In case you have a garden, make it a habit of planting a tree to commemorate a family happening. Getting married, the first child, etc.

It seems as if every year the fires are getting worse. Australia, the Amazon, and Russia each had devastating fires in 2019. Now we are in 2020, and California in the United States is burning. It is more than clear it needs enormous planting actions worldwide to repair the damage.

Before you leave, have a look at my Recommendations page. I hope you will find something of your interest.

Yes Trees are the lungs of the world.
Almost every day we hear many trees being cut or being earmarked for cutting in the name of development.

I am from India and am glad to see that your website mentions about the record breaking efforts of India and Pakistan in planting huge number of Saplings.
Nice photos and good website.

    Good morning M Anand Kumar,

Thank you for visiting my website and reading my post on the trees. It is sad that most people do not realize how important trees are for our world. The same applies for insects, bees, etc. it all forms part of a beautiful plan which should remain in harmony and balance, like that our Earth will survive including us, the human race.

It’s great to see that so many countries are starting to take action to protect and grow more trees. Without them we will all become extinct, as we will suffocate in our own carbon dioxide.

What is also saving a lot of trees is the use of email. Regular mail is fast becoming a thing of the past and paperless offices are fast becoming a reality.

I think we have maybe left it a little late, but if everyone works together, I am sure we can get a healthy population of trees again worldwide.

    Good afternoon Michel,

Thank you for your visit and leaving a comment. I hope you downloaded your free PDF?

In old times I used to write letters by hand before getting my computer in 2013. I must admit that receiving a letter is nicer than an email but you are right in saying it does save paper.

Time is running out and I sincerely hope we can still make a significant contribution to at least slow down global warming.

Hey Taetske,

Kudos to Pakistan for initiating the Tsunami of the Thousand Million Trees! It should definitely be applied in all countries too, I keep seeing a lot of trees being cut down and it’s troubling. I live in a small city of Shah Alam in Malaysia, we used to be covered with trees all around as the city was a forest many years back but now, the municipal council has cut everything, even those small trees by the roadside. I know they’re just doing their job but should more trees in the city be a good thing?

    Good afternoon Riaz,

What a shame the municipal council of your town has cut down all the trees, also the young ones. I hope they will plant new trees in the near future as it will be so beneficial for the air you breathe.

There are many more projects worldwide where `people plant new trees. I am sending you a link about the story of a 9-year-old boy who has made a big impact on the world..https://motherearthstreasures.com/reforestation-amazing-vision-of-a-young-boy

This is a really great article. Cutting down of trees without replacement has been known to cause depletion of oxygen. This goes a long way; without oxygen man and animal cannot survive, perhaps if we can really remind ourselves of these facts then deforestation will surely reduce so we don’t cut down ourselves to extinction.

A lot of people have become conscious of the fact that we need trees to survive. We need nature to survive but sadly many crimes are committed to our environment. Often it is the leaders with big companies who take these decisions and we have to suffer the consequences. We should choose our leader more carefully.

You hit the nail on the head there with your article on the importance of tree for our planet. The area I reside use to be full of trees and as cool and fresh as place can be, but as time passed people kept felling all this tree, not to build anything but just because they can, now my area is the hottest in the whole town. It’s so hot and choked that a cassette I left on my cars dashboard melted all over the dashboard. True story

    Good Morning Nathaniel,

Nice to see you again. Thank you for your comment.

That is really a sad story. One of the important things we have to teach our children is to protect our environment. How about having a local movement, plant 1 tree in your life?

The importance of trees, and their affect on the world climate, cannot be overlooked!  What a noble thing!

This is extremely important because of global warming.  People don’t realize just how serious this issue is.  Global warming is rapidly changing the world environment.

Planting more trees is a great way to fight climate changes.  With so many trees lost everyday, they should absolutely be replaced in other areas.  The loss to gain ratio of trees should be in favor of the trees, or at least 50/50.  I can’t imagine what that ratio actually is!

    Good Morning Dave,

I live on a farm in the south of Spain since 1981. I have planted many trees here during these years. I think each person should at a minimum plant 1 tree in his/her life.

Globally there are some 420 trees per person. Finland has 22 billion trees, that means 4.500 per person.

Trees are very important and many countries/companies in Europe have forest plantation projects. One of the companies  I invested in – this is a French company – have a project. We are planting 10-15 hectares new forest every year in France, Spain, and Italy. Many countries in the EU give financial support to planting new forests. I am sure that more and more countries will have financial programs like this.

    Good Morning,

Yes, I know about those projects and they are very good. Sad thing is that there are such huge fires in the Mediterranian countries, each year. Then also huge fires in America, Russia, and Sweden. More trees need to be planted.

The role of trees in our life is to numerous, aging from removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, they serve as habitat to many animals, food to mankind and help to control erosion.Deforestation is a major threat that will destroy our plants, environment and the earth. As Indian and Pakistan are continually planting trees,it is it of urgent importance for every other country in the world to do same to save our earth and environment.

Human greed is often behind deforestation. We have to recognize this. A lot of people are realizing we have to protect our environment instead of destroying it. Sometimes even leaders of a country allow this to happen. We should choose our leaders with more care.

It’s wonderful to hear some positive news about some countries and politicians actually protecting our planet’s trees and working so hard to promote tree growth throughout the world.  Well done to India and Pakistan, and I truly hope other countries will be lead by their example, to build up our trees and forests.  This website is doing a wonderful job in highlighting the importance of looking after our trees and explaining why they are so important to us.  If more people were aware of how trees help in keeping our air clean, I’m sure the positive impact would be great and we would be celebrating the rejuvenation of our natural forests with Taetske.

    Good Morning Kim,

I was also happy to find out about these 2 big projects in Pakistan and India. I know that many countries have similar projects set up but sadly because of greed or negligence, there are too many big fires each year. Too many crimes are committed each day against our environment which is so important for survival. Once destroyed it will take ages to recuperate if it does.

Hi Taetske,

Thanks for writing this wonder article about the importance of trees for our planet. I believe Imran Khan project is an excellent idea for saving the world through tree plantation. Some time tree plantation campaign is run by government but is not followed widely. Local political corruption and some greedy person applied their power to cut trees on government property. We should protest them and rise a voice against them also. I am going to share this article with my other friends also.

    Good Morning Mzakapon,

Nice to see you again. Thank you for your comment.

Thank you for wanting to share this article with your friends. The more people become conscious of the importance of the trees for our survival the better. Sadly some countries have chosen the wrong leaders who give permission to big companies for deforestation. Other times the laws are not followed and when one finds out about it it is too late as the trees are gone. We have to teach the younger generation to take better care of our Planet, we ourselves are certainly not a good example.

Oh, this is such a refreshing post to read about trees and also about how to plant trees too. I think Mr Khan was really good to bring up an initiative that looks to plant trees. Like you said, the two counties have set an important example to other countries to make sure that they also try to plant trees.

All in all, I have learnt something good and I would be happy to read that book and also plant trees too because as I have learnt, trees are important for our planet.

    Good afternoon Susan,

Often people are not really conscious of the importance trees have, be it for the planet or for us humans. The setup of creation is amazing. Everything is related, and when one thing fails, the total suffers the consequences.

If everybody would plant at least 1 tree in his or her life, our earth would show another picture. I think it depends on how parents educate their children.

Thank you for your visit and for your comment. I hope you downloaded your free PDF? Tulip widget.
