The quality of the air we breathe is of utmost importance for our health

Air pollution is a worrisome topic. Mother Earth supplies a lot of healthy air. There would be more than enough for everybody in this world if we humans were not so stupid as to pollute this important element.

Think big cities, loads of cars with their fumes from exhaust pipes. Then the industry putting more toxins in the air. Instead of opting for clean energy like water, air, and solar, we still want fossil energy, which is dirty, to say the least.

On top of it, we cut down the big helpers which grow on our planet. Trees clean the air, but those areas which one can see as green lungs are mercilessly cut and destroyed. The Amazon is a good example of human stupidity, and recently the news of Tongass National Forest was also negative.

Our oxygen source

Trees produce so much oxygen and it, therefore, is not understandable that trees are cut down. Their value as oxygen producers far outweighs the wood value. Paper, furniture, and houses are made of wood. Obviously, there is a need for wood and wood products in our world, but the harvesting of the trees must be in a sustainable manner.

To harvest the old-growth forests destroys not only the trees but also all the life depending on it. From deer to birds and insects, even mushrooms depend on the fallen debris of trees.

What does it help us if the air we breathe is so bad it affects our health and means a premature death?  You can call it a limited view if you can only see the profit of today, but do not see the consequences of your actions in the future. If we eliminate the trees from our planet, the entire system will collapse. Destroy nature’s balance and we will destroy ourselves.

Here is an interesting video.

How polluted air affects people

Worldwide the negative impact of dirty air on the health of the population is great.  Data for 2016 shows that 4.2 million death were directly related to air pollution. Recent studies say that bad air is linked to 3.2 million new diabetes cases each year and that all this pollution has a direct influence on your cognitive ability.

Many big cities worldwide have a serious battle with air pollution. You remember the pictures on tv of cities in China or India. The people living there are told to stay home or when walking on the streets have to wear masks. It is especially bad for children and the elderly.

The worst cities in the U.S. Even if the U.S. has vast areas with lovely clean air in many cities, it can get suffocating. I traveled myself for 3 weeks through the U.S.  in 2016 and could compare the great wilderness with some big cities.

Spain also has a problem with the air.  Big cities like Madrid and Barcelona have gone through some terrible periods. Walking their small dogs on the streets, people would notice the poor animal could hardly breathe. There have been times where a system was put up letting you drive or not, depending on your license plate number. Even numbers on even days, etc.

They restricted the center of the cities to people living there and taxis. It was announced on tv that one should take the train, bus or metro and they also suggested sharing cars.

Take care of your health, be informed

Most diseases can be aggravated when the air you breathe is polluted. You can also get respiratory ailments through polluted air.

With contributions from international experts in this field, this volume is a valuable guide. Not only for researchers, clinicians in toxicology, medicine, and public health as well as industry and government regulatory scientists involved in health protection.

This book is a valuable guide for the “normal” person interested in their own health and that of their loved ones. The more you know, the better you are prepared to take your own decisions concerning your health.

Have you heard of the Smog Project?

I came across a very interesting article written by Thomas Page, CNN style.

Of the ten most polluted cities in the world, 9 are in India with Dehli in 6th place. With its estimated 18.6 million people (2016), it is the 5th most populous city in the world and the largest city in India area-wise.

This city has an immense problem with its toxic smog. In 2017 there was a period where the air was so polluted that it was equivalent to smoking like 44 cigarettes a day. You can imagine how bad that is for everybody but especially for old people, children, and babies.

It is extremely difficult to influence all the culprits who are the creators of this foul air. First, you have biomass burning and industry and transport emissions. As economic growth is climbing sharply, they predict that by the year 2040 car ownership in India will have risen by some 775%. Let’s hope that by then it will be electric cars.

An ambitious and unusual project

As you can see, an urgent need for a daring, call it futuristic project is asked for. Znera Space, a Dubai-based architecture firm, has come up with an ambitious proposal to solve this problem. Giant towers, looming like 100 meters in the sky, form a network of air filters.

From the bottom, the polluted air is absorbed, it then goes through 5 stages of filtration to then come out at the top as clean air.

Different filtering methods are at work here. Charcoal-activated carbon, negative ion generators, and electrostatically charged plasma, which trap airborne particles. The air is forced upwards where it goes through a photo-catalyst filter to sterilize bacteria and viruses and voila; it releases clean air. Each tower has the capacity of producing 353 million cubic feet of clean air per day.

These towers are connected and get the power to operate through solar hydrogen cells, which form a hexagonal network of “sky bridges” between the towers. This design would be a network of towers and a grid that would be self-sustaining.

As these towers collect harmful particles like carbon, one has to find a way of recycling them. The designers of this project have come up with the idea of re-utilizing these particles for graphene, concrete, fertilizer, ink, and water distillation.

More innovative projects exist

It might very well be that they will build this project to help clean the air of one of the most polluted cities in the world. Other, similar projects have been presented. Daan Roosegaarde, a Dutch designer, showed his project of a Smog Free Tower in Beijing in 2016. His tower is 23 -foot high and cleans 25 million cubic air per day.

Another company, Berlin-based Green City Solutions, has a 13-foot by 10 foot moss-culture installation with the name City Tree. The company claims it works as efficiently as 275 trees cleaning the pollution from the air.

Conclusion

First humans pollute the air, to then try to find a solution to clean it again. Building towers to filter the dirty air might seem a good idea, but let’s face it, we have nature to do this job. We should protect nature so it can work to our benefit. Protect the trees of this world instead of cutting them.

Then we should go green. Water, sun, and wind would give us clean energy and at the same time use electric vehicles, all this together would make our air breathable again.

Recently, I came across this disturbing video. I hope you will take the time to watch it.

Dear Taetske,

Thanks a lot for the great and amazing post on “Amazing Solutions for the air pollution in our World”.

I from India and I am really worried when I came to know that… Of the 10 most polluted cities in the world 9 are in India. It really hurts and felt bad.

I am really shocked when you discussed about the problems Air pollution can create (Air pollution = smoking 44 cigarettes a day).  It was a relief to hear about Znera space… Just like that we polluted the air but how difficult and how expensive it is to clean it, you really explained it well.

We need to protect and save the trees in order to save our mankind.

Thanks a lot for the caring post.

Wishing you great success!

Your Friend,

Paul

    Good afternoon Paul,

Thank you for visiting my website and leaving such a nice comment on my post.

I can very well understand you feel upset about the fact that the most polluted cities are in India. But, let’s face it, all the people worldwide carry the responsibility to take care of the water, the air, and Mother Nature in general. We are not very good at that and it is a shame as to find solutions is a lot more difficult than to take a bit more care of your surroundings. On the other hand, one can also observe many good and helpful inventions made by thoughtful people worldwide.

I hope that common sense will win over those who only have money making in their mind whatever the cost.

    Regards, Taetske

Thanks a lot for the motivation and great advice once again. I planted a tree recently (a cut down one from the roadside) and planted it on our garden. For weeks nothing happened today I am happy to see small leaves are coming from it. I remembered your post while looking at it. Thanks again!

        Good evening Paul,

Nice to see you back again and thank you for telling me about the baby tree in your garden. I hope it will become a big and beautiful tree in the coming years so your grandchildren will tell their children that their grandfather planted it.
I am giving you the link to a post I wrote some time ago. Even if India has a lot of polluted cities there is some really positive information you might not have heard about.

We have to take this issue more seriously. After reading this review I realize the importance of the quality of the air. This article explained about why we need to breath quality air, how much it affects the people if they inhale bad air and also a lot more about Air pollution.

I haven’t heard about the Smog project. So it is good to know about that project.

The explanations were really easy to read and understand. Thank you so much for sharing this post.

    Good Morning Sujandar,

Thank you for leaving a comment on my website.

Without air, we cannot live and that makes it difficult to understand that we pollute it so much. I am blessed as I live in an area where the air is great so I have no health problems. I hope you also live in an area where the air is clean.

It was shocking for me to learn from your blog that 4 million people died as a result of air pollution. That is really an alarming statistic.

It makes me so cross knowing that we humans who were supposed to be the ‘order of the highest intelligence,’ are killing every single good thing that we touch. From the animals to the plants and eventually ourselves.

I read somewhere that even if we were to plant trees on a consistent basis, it would still not be enough to save us from air pollution.

Wow, the part of the Towers that are built to recycle toxic air is a real cool idea. I just hope that people will not think that it’s okay to carry on living as normal. We need to wake up and each of us take responsibility.

We need the earth more than it needs us.

Your article was thought-provoking and I think more folks should read what you have to say.Keep it up.

What you said is true, we need Mother Earth, she does not need us. She would be better off without the human race causing havoc. Look at all the stupid and damaging things we are doing. The cutting of trees, plastic waste is suffocating the environment, The killing of certain animal species causing a disbalance, using pesticides all over the place polluting land and water, and sadly the list is much longer.

Yes, it is time we wake up and realize we are the dangerous species.

The amount of pollution caused by humans is mind-boggling. Most human activities result in pollution. Think about automobiles and the emission of CO2, you think about furniture and the feeling down of forest trees. The list is endless and all of these contribute immensely to the environmental pollution and climate change the experience today. The way forward is renewable energy, I am happy that governments around the world and private institutions are taking bold steps in that direction.

    Taetske

    Good Morning Zuchii,

Thank you for your visit and leaving a comment. With your last statement, I say I cannot fully agree. It is true many countries do their best to curb pollution, clean the air and the environment. Often what they are doing is not enough but at least they are going in the right direction.

On the other hand, there are still too many countries which stubbornly refuse to admit we are causing Global Warming resulting in Climate Change. All this has grave consequences for the human race as a whole and probably future generations will be highly upset at the heritage we have left them.

It is not too late but nearly.

Hi, Taetske, I know what you saying and I am observing this subject matter for many years myself wondering for instance, why the electric car wasn’t pushed much earlier?

The actual plans for electric cars did exist already in the 70s but were kept down by???? of course, the oil-producing countries. Back then, no one really showed interest or saw the need for a cleaner future.

I am so far surprised when I heard that China is pushing more and more electric cars, only, for there cities. It should be made mandatory for all big cities like Berlin London, Paris, New York City, just to name a few, to only let electric cars being used.

I also found the part in your article very interesting where companies try to find solutions to clean the air but, as you said it so terrific, we should let Mother Nature doing its job. What we need to do is to support her in this matter.

I really enjoyed the read. Thank you for sharing.

    Taetske

    Good Morning Sylvia,

You said it. We should support Mother Nature but we are mostly doing the contrary. Worldwide there are many good movements going, be it on governmental level or private so that is positive. On the other hand you often also see horrible decisions taken on the highest level which are harmful to our Planet and to humans as well.

I sometimes get the impression it is a battle between good and bad and the outcome is not sure yet.

As you said electric cars have been here a long time but the sales were never pushed. Look at our food industry and Big Pharma. Lots of harmful things there but our health is not important money is. Often good things are being kept hidden from us as not enough money can be made with it.

Thank you for your comment. I hope you downloaded your free PDF?

Hello

I like your theme of air pollution. I live in a small country in Europe, Slovenija and we don’t have big problems with polluted air, because we have a lot of woods, we’re one of the greenest country in the world and every time I go for a walk in the forest by my house, I’m grateful for that clean air and a smell of the fallen leaves and mushrooms… On the other hand I’ve been in Thailand, Vietnam, Venezuela and other big countries that have a big pollution problems, especially in cities, so I think it’s good that you’re pointing these things out. Your photos are beautiful, and your article is written really well, so I hope it will reach many people.

You are blessed to be able to live in a beautiful country with lots of trees and clean air. I have a good friend who lives in Maribor, have not seen her for ages but we always keep contact.

I live on a farm in the south of Spain and I am also blessed with good clean air. By only going to Malaga, the capital of the province Malaga, I notice the difference in the air. It is not too bad as it lies on the sea so with a good breeze the bad air flies away.

Hello! We live on the West Coast of the United States (Oregon).  I can tell you from experience that we have a LOT of trees and some of the best air to be found.  Oregon and Washington state have done a really good job of managing forest so that they are sustainable.  After reading you article, I am feeling extremely blessed to live where I live.

I visited in India for just over a month.  There are some parts of the country that are lush, green and beautiful….very clean air.  Then there are the cities full of exhaust and horrible smog (not to mention sewage in the streets). I can’t believe i might have been smoking 44 sigs for every day I was in the city.  yuck!

I wish the city planners around the world would consider the long term impact of not creating more green spaces.  Every inch of ground does not have to produce $$.  Making some parts of the cities into green spaces will save money and lives!

Looks like there is hope thanks to technology…but I still put my trust in the trees!

Peace!

    Good Morning,

During my U.S. trip in 2016, from Denver to Idaho, and ending in Seattle, we made a 4 day stop in Leavenworth/Washington, so I know that lovely area. We made 2 nice hiking tours in the mountains and enjoyed the clean air and beautiful trees.

I live on a farm in the south of Spain and am also blessed with good air. I have visited Thailand and the Philippines twice and remember it was very different from where I live.

I agree with you. Even if technology might solve many problems we have made I also prefer Mother Nature to do the job. Question is do we let her?

The fact that projects and innovations are being put in place to reduce the rate of air pollution in the world brings relief. There is hope that the world will be as clean as we want it to be. But while all these are yet to have an impact in the entire world, we should also be mindful of the air breathe in from the surrounding environment.

I was very surprised to see bad air being linked to new cases of diabetes. Who knows that’ll happen? Anyway, it is good the know there are projects to lessen the air pollution issues though I doubt it’ll ever be resolved.
At my home, my husband grew and continues growing greens, from small potted plants to actually growing trees in the common area within the neighborhood. However, we see neighbors chopping down trees and throwing away potted plants. Sad.
As always, love reading your articles, Taetske.
Good day!

    Good Morning Sharon,

What a nice surprise to see you again. Thank you for your visit and for your comment.

It will be really difficult to solve this air pollution problem. It will need to start on a personal level. One has to realize this is a serious issue. Children have to be educated on this problem as well. On a national level laws for air pollution have to become stricter so big companies emit cleaner air from their facilities. There is still so much to be done.

Nice that your husband is planting trees. I have done the same on my farm and now enjoy the shade in the hot summer.
